Message from Fr. John

 |
Dear Parishioners,
One of the more frequent questions I get regards the reception of
communion by Catholics in non-Catholic churches, and the reception of
communion at a Catholic Mass by non-Catholics. In this age of increased
ecumenical activity between the varying denominations, more and more
Catholics find themselves going to services in non-Catholic churches,
and non-Catholics more frequently attend Holy Mass with their Catholic
family members and friends. In light of this reality, what about the
reception of communion? Who should receive where, and when?
In our Catholic Tradition, we do not have what many refer to as “open
communion.” Open communion means that anyone, regardless of their
denomination, can approach and receive the host and the cup. Many times
the minister will simply state that if you have accepted Christ as your
Lord and Savior, or if you are a Christian believer, you can receive
communion. This practice is very common in many Protestant churches.
In the Catholic Church, however, the reception of communion is reserved
solely for baptized Catholics who are in good standing with the Church
and in a state of grace (free from serious sin). To some people, this
practice seems inhospitable at the least, and exclusive at best.
However, we Catholics hold this position based primarily on what we
believe the Eucharist is.
To us Catholics, the Eucharist is the Real Presence of Jesus Christ.
This teaching is very different from many Protestant churches, who
believe that the bread and wine (or grape juice) are merely symbols of
Christ. Additionally, for us Catholics, the Eucharist is an outward
sign of our complete unity with one another, an acknowledgement that we
are all united in faith and morals under the leadership of Pope
Benedict XVI and the bishops.
Sadly, no one can deny the fact that there are divisions within
Christianity today, some of which are very significant. For Catholics
to invite non-Catholics (or even non-Christians) to receive communion
at Holy Mass would be an acknowledgement of a unity that simply does
not exist yet. This is the primary reason we Catholics are not allowed
to take communion in non-Catholic churches as well.
To some people, these restrictions on the reception of communion seem
overly exclusive and inhospitable, even un-Christian. I’ve had many
people say it’s just rude and inconsiderate to not invite all people to
receive communion, regardless of their denomination, or to not receive
communion when invited to in a non-Catholic church. My response to
these criticisms is always the same; you need not agree with it, but
certainly respect it.
Reception of the Eucharist is about much more than just hospitality and
inclusiveness because the Eucharist is more than just a symbol, more
than just a meal. The Eucharist, by its very nature, is a real and
mystical sharing in the saving mystery of Jesus Christ. The Eucharist,
celebrated by Christ only once before He died, and only with His
Apostles who were united with Him and had been with Him from the
beginning of His ministry, is the continued presence of Christ in our
midst freely given to us who believe for our
Salvation.
