Fourth Sunday in Ordinary Time

From Fr. John

Dear Parishioners,
No discussion of ethics, medical or otherwise, would be complete without talking about "Natural Law" and "Divine Revelation." These two sets of terms form the basis for a natural ethic (ethics that can be arrived at through the use of human reason) and a supernatural ethic (ethics that are arrived at through God's revelation to humanity).
In the midst of contemporary discussions on health care ethics today, most ethicists and experts wish to keep the talks at the natural (or human) level. There is, with many of these ethicists, a strong suspicion and distrust of religion and "God-talk." Many of them believe that religion is both insufficient and incompatible with modern ethical deliberations, and that religion presents an overly-narrow set of teachings based on "fantasy" rather than "fact."
One of the greatest teachers in our Catholic faith, St. Thomas Aquinas, thought differently. He believed, unlike many people during his day, that faith was not incompatible with reason, and that human beings could see the image of God in the natural world around them. He further taught that nature operated within a set of clearly-seen laws (the natural law), and that we humans, even in the absence of faith, could see their wisdom. For example, Aquinas taught that the Ten Commandments were simply natural law, and that even people of no faith could see their reasonableness and wisdom.
For us Catholics, it is not sufficient to keep discussions of healthcare ethics at the purely natural level. Rather, we understand that God has also revealed certain things to us through the scriptures and through our tradition that constitute supernatural ethics. For example, God has revealed to us through Christ that suffering has a redemptive value. Whenever we willingly accept our moments of suffering with courage and faith in Jesus Christ, we believe we share in the work of Christ's redemption (Col 1:24).
With this being said, we Catholics are much more careful and concerned with end-of-life issues such as euthanasia. At a purely natural level, it may seem to make sense to "put someone out of their misery" when they are suffering. However, to us Catholics who see suffering as a redemptive act, physician-assisted suicide is vicious rather than virtuous.
Christian ethics seeks to illuminate natural ethics with the supernatural light of revelation. Natural ethics alone is not enough for us. Certainly natural ethics is an area in which we can have discussions with other ethicists, both religious and non-religious. However, these discussions will only take us so far, as we are seeing now with the current debate on healthcare reform in regards to public funding for abortion.
For us Catholics, we believe God has seen fit to reveal things to us that are beyond the scope of human reason that allow us to know God at an even deeper level. This revelation will often seem counter-intuitive and lacking in common sense, but it is revelation that will take us even deeper into a more intimate understanding of who God is and what God desires for us. Next week I will talk about how the bishops, as successors to the Apostles, are the ones entrusted with interpreting this revelation for practical application at any given time and place.
