Pentecost Sunday

Dear Parishioners,
When most people hear the 6th Commandment - You Shall Not Commit Adultery, they think it applies simply to sexual relations within the context of marriage. However, as the Catechism of the Catholic Church teaches us, this commandment obligates us to sexual purity regardless of our state in life (married, engaged, single, widowed, etc.).
In this day and age, that's a tough sell. After all, we exist in a culture where sex is "just sex" and it's "no big deal" and "as long as no one get hurt, it's fine." I tell you, as a priest I've heard all of the rationalizations. Human sexuality, however, is just the opposite. It's NOT "just sex" and it IS a "big deal". Human sexuality actually is the area in which we MOST image God and his creative ability. God, being a creator, has shared his creative ability with us through sexuality. Therefore, when we engage in that very sacred activity, we had better be sure it is in conformity with the desire and will of God.
Through the years, the Catholic Church has been called such things as "prudish" and "out of touch" when it specifically comes to such things as sex before marriage. When I hear this criticism, I always try to respond by teaching our critics to look at sex from a little different perspective. One moment like this that I specifically remember involved a friend of mine, he was about 35 or so, who had a string of unsuccessful relationships with women. These relationships always involved sexual relations outside of marriage.
One day he was complaining to me that he had been praying and praying for God to send him Ms. Wonderful so he could get married and settle down. I responded by asking him the question, "What is one of the foundational requirements regarding our sexuality in marriage?" He looked at me kind of funny, and then replied, "Being faithful to your spouse." I said, "Exactly. Now answer me this other question. How will you do that if you have never practiced this before marriage?" He had to think for a minute, but then he understood what I was talking about.
Chastity and faithfullness in marriage takes practice. It is not something that magically occurs once the wedding vows are recited. Therefore, one of the big reasons the Church preaches abstinence before marriage is so that people can practice for the demands of married life. Look at it this way; if you are used to having sexual relations before marriage, even if it is with your future spouse, what happens when problems occur in that marriage and, God forbid, you become attracted to another person? People who have sexual relations before marriage often are not practiced in abstaining from sex outside of marriage. Therefore, it is much easier for them to slip into an inappropriate sexual relationship with someone other than their spouse.
Don't buy into the hype that premarital sex is "healthy," "normal," and "good for seeing if you are 'compatible' in that area." Rather, look at abstinence before marriage as that time you are practicing the art of faithfulness toward your spouse. And we all know what is said about practice. It "makes perfect!"
Fr. John
