13th Sunday in Ordinary Time

Dear Parishioners
Here's an interesting proposition for you. Imagine a dog. It has four legs. Now consider that its tail is a leg too. How many legs does the dog now have? If you said five, you're wrong. It still has four. Just because we may consider that tail a leg, the tail still remains just a tail.
I mention this because oftentimes we treat sin in precisely the same manner. Many people come to me and say something like, "Fr. John, I know the church says missing mass on Sundays is a sin, but I don't feel like it is. A lot of other people skip mass too, so it must not be that serious." Simply put, many people think that if they feel something isn't a sin, it must not be. However, simply thinking something is not a sin doesn't make it any less sinful, just like thinking a dog's tail is a leg doesn't make it any less a tail.
Sin is, in many ways, the result of a LIE. Satan lies to us when he tempts us to choose something contrary to God's will. We lie to ourselves oftentimes when we want to do something that goes against the gospel of Christ. We will often go round and round in our minds trying to justify to ourselves why we should be able to commit some sinful act. However, when we play those games with ourselves and with God, we do so at our own peril.
Our feelings are about the least reliable indicators of what is or isn't a sin. Rather, for us to truly know sin, we must move beyond what we feel. Specifically, we must learn from the Bible and from the Church what is and isn't sinful. Also we must properly form our consciences so they can warn us when we are treading on dangerous territory. And we must pray and receive the sacraments regularly so as to receive the graces necessary to recognize and overcome sinful temptations.
Recognizing and overcoming sin begins with learning about the Gospel of Christ and what He does and does not consider sinful behavior. We do this by studying both the Bible and the Church's teachings, especially those found in the Catechism of the Catholic Church. If any of you reading this don't have a Bible and a Catechism, pledge to yourselves today that you will get them. We can order them for you through the office if need be. Just give us a call.
Studying the Bible and the Catechism helps us form our consciences. Our conscience is literally the voice of God inside each of us that prompts us to "do good and avoid evil." Sadly, many people today have poorly-formed consciences. Some people have ignorant consciences because they've never really learned many of the ways of Christ. Some have wrongly-formed consciences, meaning they've been taught and have learned things that are contrary to the Gospel. Some people have lax consciences, in that they've committed the same sins over and over again so much that what they used to consider sinful they no longer do. When we have properly formed consciences, however, we know better what God wants us to do in any given circumstance, and we can separate the truth from mere human rationalization.
Simply knowing what is right or wrong according to our conscience is still not enough, however. We still must be able to do the right thing each and every time. This is where prayer and the sacraments come in. Prayer and the sacraments give us the grace to do the right thing, even when it's difficult. These graces assist us in being strong and courageous in the face of temptation, and they empower us to more Christ-like in our everyday lives.
Next week I will continue this discussion, so stay tuned.
Fr. John
