Knights in Parade

Who are the Knights?
The Knights of Columbus is the world's largest Catholic family fraternal service organization with 1.6 million members. It provides members and their families with volunteer opportunities in service to the Catholic Church, their communities, families and young people.

As a member of the Knights of Columbus you and your family enjoy many benefits, including 12 free issues annually of the Columbia magazine, the world's largest Catholic family magazine, eligibility to join the Knights of Columbus top-ranked life insurance program, and many more family and personal benefits.

How To Join
Membership in the Knights of Columbus is open to practicing Catholic men in union with the Holy See, who are at least 18 years old. A practicing Catholic is one who lives up to the Commandments of God and the precepts of the Church. Application blanks are available from any member of the Knights of Columbus.

Anyone who is interested in joining our council may contact Membership Director Gary McFadyen (mcfadyen@cavs.msstate.edu) or Grand Knight Danny Setaro (gksetaro@bellsouth.net).

4th Degree EmblemAny Third Degree member in good standing, one year after the anniversary of his First Degree, is eligible for membership in the Fourth Degree. The primary purpose of the Fourth Degree is to foster the spirit of patriotism by promoting responsible citizenship and a love of and loyalty to the Knights' respective countries through active membership in local Fourth Degree groups (called "assemblies"). Certain members of the Fourth Degree serve as honor guards at civic and religious functions, an activity that has brought worldwide recognition to the Knights of Columbus.

The Sir Knight Eugene T. Hicks Assembly of Starkville and Columbus gathers regularly on the 2nd Monday of each month, alternating between business meetings held at St. Joseph's parish and family dinners at area restaurants.  The Assembly supports patriotic activity through (1) promotion of patriotic essay and coloring contests for area youth, (2) distribution of "Get-Out-the-Vote" posters prior to general elections, and (3) sponsorship of patriotic Masses on public holidays, including Independence Day and September 11.  The Assembly also provides an Honor Guard for special occasions such as Confirmation Masses.  Additional information about the Assembly is available by e-mail from Mike Kassouf, Faithful Navigator, at kassouf@bellsouth.net

Ladies Auxiliary

In addition to assisting with cooking and decorating for Knight of Columbus installation dinners, we wash and iron the altar linens on a weekly basis.  We host a parish family Lenten dinner each year.  We set up and decorate for the May crowning on the first Sunday of May.  We have hosted a vocation luncheon and made rosary cases for the First Communion Class.  We have made, sewn, hemmed and ironed the white robes for the RCIA candidates at Easter.  Our community outreach includes assisting the local Crisis Pregnancy Center and the diocesan Catholic Charities by making and donating baby receiving blankets.

For further information, please contact current President of the Ladies Auxiliary, Linda Upchurch, at ____.

Squires EmblemUnder the guidance of Christian Brother Barnabas McDonald (1865-1929), the first Columbian Squires circle was instituted in 1925. Membership in the Squires is for Catholic boys between the ages of 12 and 17. Squires' activities are many, varying from spiritual to active service for the Church and community. Each circle elects officer members from their own rank, teaching skills of leadership and responsibility.

At this time, we do not have a Squires circle associated with the local council..
